Vaping in Australia: Common Questions Answered

By August 1, 2018September 5th, 2019No Comments

Welcome to Preach Vapour! We know there’s a lot of misinformation out there about vaping in Australia and we want you to have the best information. Some common questions about vaping in Australia are answered below…

“Isn’t vaping worse for you than smoking?”

Evidence so far indicates that e-cigarettes are far less harmful than smoking as they don’t contain tobacco or involve combustion. In fact, an independent evidence review by experts in 2015 published by the Public Health of England  says the current estimate is that:

e-cigarettes are around 95% less
harmful than smoking[1].

Tobacco smoking is one of the largest preventable causes of death and disease in Australia. Smoking is estimated to kill almost 19,000 Australians a year. In 2017-2018, there were still 2.6 million Australian adults who were daily smokers (10% of the population). We want to help this group realise that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking. Spread the word! Vaping rates could increase substantially in Australia if nicotine was legalised for vaping and was readily available for adult smokers. People who do not already smoke should not start vaping – healthy lungs are happy lungs.

“How do I know what is in my eliquid?”

Do you know what is in a cigarette? 600 ingredients, which when burned create 7000 chemicals of which many are toxic and of which 69 are known to cause cancer.[2]

At Preach Vapour, there are no scary unknown chemicals. We Vaping in Australiamanufacture our eliquids on-site with 3 food grade ingredients: Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is a thick, sweet liquid that produces the clouds.  Propylene Glycol (PG) is a thinner, flavourless liquid that gives a “throat hit” which mimics the feel of smoking and Flavours.

We vet our suppliers thoroughly and only work with trusted and tested manufacturers.

“Will it really help me quit smoking?”

In spite of the legal restrictions on vaping nicotine in Australia, 227,000 or 1.2% of the population aged 18 years or above reported current vaping in 2016. Almost all of those using e-cigarettes in Australia are current or ex-smokers. Most of whom use vape devices to help them quit smoking or prevent going back to cigarettes. [3]

Smokers differ in their needs, for those still smoking and occasionally using vape, we would advise them not to give up on e-cigarettes if they do not like the first one they try. It may take some experimentation with different products and e-liquids to find the right one for you.

Our fully trained staff will give you ongoing support to help you on your journey.

“Will vaping save me money?”

It depends how much you smoke but to try and give you a gauge we’ve crunched some numbers.

Say you buy cigarettes at $30 a packet and smoke half a packet a day, you spend an average of $5,475 per year. Our customers spend an average of $1,440 per year.

So… you can start thinking about where you’d rather spend that $4K.

“Will non-vapers pick up vaping?”

The results of the Australian Inquiry (March 2018) concluded there are conflicting views on whether the evidence suggests there is an association between Ecigarette availability and the increased likelihood of young people trying and taking up smoking.[4] Cancer Research UK stated that despite the availability of E-cigarettes in the UK there has been ‘no increase in youth smoking of tobacco’.[5]

All our messaging and information here at Preach Vapour is geared towards supporting smokers to reduce or stop their tobacco intake through vaping.

The same journey was taken by our owner, Irish Croger who went from a 40 cigarettes a day habit to trying vape for the first time. He never smoked again. We also work within the legislated guidelines applying to vape stores in Australia:

Victoria e-Cigarette Reform Factsheet,
Certified Specialist e-Cigarette Retailing Premises Guide, and
Tobacco Act 1987.
